I’ve always been a dreamer…embracing the possibilities…searching for the opportunities.
For me, joining the U.S. Navy was the fulfillment of a dream. It turned out to be just the beginning – the Navy was my first vehicle of success and my lifelong path to new possibilities. As a submarine officer and later as a strategic planner and military advisor, I have had the opportunity to learn from extraordinary leaders and skilled technicians while working in exciting and demanding environments. What always resonated with me were the leaders that valued the personal growth of their subordinates, inspired great achievements, and fostered a climate of goal setting and goal attainment. The Navy afforded me the opportunity to serve on both active and reserve duty over my 28 year career and I have great memories of the people I worked with and the things that we achieved.
During my years in commercial business, I have also worked with great people and experienced great personal and team success. As my career has progressed, I have realized that the most satisfying part of my management positions was the training, mentoring, and coaching that I engaged in with my direct reports and other cross-functional team members. Helping others set goals, explore possibilities, and achieve new milestones became my true source of professional joy.
I found that the commercial business world came with a startling downside though. I have known far too many highly capable people that were not fulfilled. Many were in careers with little or no advancement opportunity, others loathed their work-life balance, many weren’t rewarded with the income they deserved or able to build the long-term wealth needed. Some were experiencing a combination of these factors. Regrets were rampant and dreams had faded away. The day finally came when I was told to pack my desk and ponder how I too ended up on this dead-end path, but I am proud to say that the dreamer in me won the day.
I am now the owner of my own business and a Career Ownership Coach with The Entrepreneur’s Source. I spend every day helping my clients dream and explore their possibilities in a safe space, free from pressure and judgment. Many of us don’t realize the amazing possibilities that are out there until we take the opportunity to have a conversation and learn. The experience was eye-opening for me, especially the financing aspects.
